Hydraulic fracturing chemicals are specialized additives mixed with water and proppants (such as sand) to create the fracking fluid used in hydraulic fracturing operations. These chemicals serve various functions that make the fracturing process more effective, safe, and efficient. Typically, fracking fluid contains about 90–95% water, 4–9% proppant, and less than 1% chemicals, but that small chemical percentage is critical to the success of the process.


The main categories of hydraulic fracturing chemicals include:


Friction reducers (e.g., polyacrylamide) – minimize friction inside pipes, allowing high-pressure pumping.


Biocides – prevent bacterial growth that can clog fractures or corrode equipment.


Scale inhibitors – stop mineral deposits from forming in the well.


Gelling agents (e.g., guar gum) – increase fluid viscosity to transport sand deeper into fractures.


Breakers – reduce viscosity after sand placement to enable flowback of fluids.


Corrosion inhibitors – protect metal well casings from chemical and fluid exposure.


Surfactants – improve fluid penetration into rock formations.


While these chemicals play a crucial role in maximizing gas and oil recovery, they are also at the center of environmental concerns. Critics argue that leaks, spills, or improper disposal could lead to groundwater contamination and potential health risks. To address this, the industry is shifting toward greener alternatives, such as plant-based gelling agents, biodegradable surfactants, and non-toxic biocides. Additionally, advances in waterless fracking techniques (using CO₂ or liquid nitrogen) aim to reduce both chemical and water usage.
